I decided to use CaribSea Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate when I first set up my 25-gallon planted aquarium since it seemed to be one of the more frequently recommended substrates. That probably wasn't the most informed reason to purchase and it didn't perform as well as I expected. Eco-Complete Planted Aquarium Substrate is still regarded highly by many hobbyists but I would do more research and probably go a different route if I was doing it again.
