The Secret Vampire Soundtrack
By the time of recording this, our momentum had grown considerably and we were HOT PROPERTY to say the least. We wanted to go the Punk route of releasing lots of 7”s on lots of labels but it made sense to do this one with Chemikal again as we had the true novelty of 3 or even 4 days in their studio (accusations of over-production followed the release of this EP believe it or not). During recording in December 1995, we were offered a co-headlining tour with the Super Furry Animals the following February and during that tour our star rose exponentially and culminated in our Top of the Pops appearances and this EP reaching No. 25 in the actual actual charts but that’s been pretty well documented now.
It's fair to say 3 of the 4 on here would be considered some of our Greatest Hits (no offence Diska) but our agenda at the time was simply recording our best 3 or 4 songs each time we had to make a record. No saving or holding back. Every record could be the last so don’t leave anything out there. This EP had all the trademark bits musically but the vocal performances are a shade more energetic. We were always guilty of being a bit cautious in the studio compared to the raw violence of the live shows but we’re getting there at this stage though the Peel Session versions from a few months earlier rock a bit harder. Anyway, you know these songs. They took us, however briefly, from the Camden Falcon to the big tent at the Reading Festival and, ultimately, back.
Trivia Nonsense – The dialogue at the start of Kandy Pop is a totally illegal sample of Drew Barrymore from a film called Bad Girls. The American voice slagging us off ironically is Lisa Paulson, ex of Sub Pop. I don’t think she spoke to us again after that but it was well-intentioned. For Top of The Pops, we had to go back into the studio and do a completely new instrumental mix as none of us remotely thought we’d ever need one so simply didn’t do one.
