Happy Thursday, which means it’s time to talk about the state of the US economy and unemployment figures in this week’s jobs report from our friends at the Department of Labor.
This week’s jobs report showed both good and bad news for the economy, as the actual unemployment figures were slightly higher than last week, but exceeded the estimates of the economists from the DOW Jones.
The weekly report showed that 745,000 Americans filed their first time unemployment claims, which is just higher than the previous week’s 736,000 revised initial claims.
These numbers are also slightly below the 850,000 first time claims predicted by economists, which is the closest they’ve been to the actual figures in quite a while.
I hope that these initial unemployment numbers start to drop once again, as it pains me to think about more than 745,000 Americans filing claims for the first time.
Meanwhile, a recent basic income experiment in the city of Stockton in the great state of California, showed some very interesting information regarding providing a basic income for residents and employment numbers as a result of these payments.
Researchers from the University of Tennessee and University of Pennsylvania looked at the impact on employment if they gave households in Stockton, CA monthly $500 checks for 1 year.
They explained in their analysis that: “between February 2019 and February 2020, the share of participants in the study with full-time employment rose by 12%”.
While this study was only conducted on 125 households, I think a basic income for families across America would be amazing for both employment/unemployment rates, as well as some much needed breathing room for millions of people struggling financially.
Finally, as President Biden and the Senate continue to argue over the details of the $1.9 trillion stimulus package, some Dems are staying adamant and are fighting to ensure $400 weekly extended enhanced unemployment benefits through the end of September.
Senator Ron Wyden from the great state of Oregon explained the need to pass federal unemployment benefits through the end of September: "It's a prescription for trouble to have this expire in August."
Wyden continued: "This critical relief package is going to get done before anybody goes over the cliff."
Elizabeth Pancotti, policy director at Employ America, also stated: "It's truly a shame Congress keeps having to come back to this and keep jobless workers in limbo when they could enact automatic extensions to jobless benefits until the market recovers, which we expect will take some time."
I completely agree with these statements, and hope that Congress can finally get their act together to deliver us the necessary extended enhanced unemployment benefits we need right now, or at least until we have a better handle on that thing out there.
