What is a Contronym? What are some examples of contronyms? The English language includes an interesting category of words and phrases called contronyms (also spelled contranyms, or referred to as autoantonyms) — terms that, depending on context, can have opposite or contradictory meanings. A contronym, often referred to as a Janus word or auto-antonym, is a word that evokes contradictory or reverse meanings depending on the context. Specifically, a contronym is a word with a homonym (another word with the same spelling but different meaning) that is also an antonym (a word with the opposite meaning). Contronym is a word which has two meanings, both contradictory to each other. Contronyms are a combination of homonyms (words with similar spelling or pronunciation) and antonyms (words with opposite meaning). This video includes a list of interesting examples of contronyms : dust, off, put out, execute, transparent, left, overlook, back up, seed.
