황교안 대행•美 펜스 부통령 한반도 정세 논의...대북 경고 발표할 듯
U.S. Vice President Mike Pence is sitting down for talks with South Korea's acting president as we speak... to discuss North Korea and the ongoing deployment of the THAAD missile defense system to South Korea.
For details on what more could be on the agenda, we connect to Connie Kim at the Prime Minister's office.
Connie?
Daeun, the agenda for the talks between South Korea's Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn and U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will most likely include response measures to North Korea's provocations and the ongoing installation of the THAAD missile defense system.
The THAAD deployment has become a contentious topic due to a comment made yesterday.
A White House official traveling with Pence said... the completion of the THAAD deployment is up to South Korea's next president,... as the installation could be difficult to complete before the May ninth election,... raising speculation about a possible change to the plan.
Following up on the U.S. official's comments, South Korea said Seoul and Washington's position on the deployment is unchanged and they both will push for completion of the THAAD installation.
The joint statement following Hwang and Pence's talks will likely send a strong warning to North Korea and reaffirm Washington's ironclad military alliance with South Korea.
What else is on Pence's schedule after his meeting and joint press conference? Also, I believe this is the third visit by a senior U.S. official since Trump came into office. What does that tell us?
Later today, Pence will meet with National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun... to discuss President Trump's North Korea policy and THAAD.
And before he leaves for Japan, Pence will speak with South Korean business leaders to explain the administration's economic policies... due to fears Trump is taking the U.S. down the path of protectionism.
Regarding your second question,... considering U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson have already visited Seoul,... South Korean officials say the new man in the White House is putting a lot of weight on the two countries' alliance and solving the North Korea issue.
