Mohammed Morsy, the first democratically elected president of Egypt, is overthrown.
After days of mass protests, the military toppled Morsy late Wednesday, local time, and put him under house arrest.
The army has outlined a new roadmap for the nation.
Connie Lee reports. Hundreds of thousands of protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square erupted into cheers of joy and waved flags upon word President Morsy had been overthrown by the army.
"We want to thank God that he rid us of the Muslim Brotherhood that are not even Muslim."
The Egyptian military ousted Morsy from power on Wednesday, after the president failed to the fulfill the military's ultimatum to "meet the demands of the people."
Egypt's military general made the announcement in a televised broadcast, while suspending the constitution and laying out a new "roadmap" for the country.
This includes a call for new elections and an interim technocrat government.
In the meantime, the chief of Egypt's constitutional court will lead as president.
Also standing in protest were thousands of Morsy supporters, who chanted that they will not accept military rule.
Morsy and his leaders called the day's events a military coup.
"The picture is clear, we are facing a military coup using as an excuse for the political opposition."
Morsy had refused to step down and is calling Egyptians to not follow after the military.
This comes about a year after he was freely elected as president.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Obama has expressed deep concern over the military's removal of the president, and has called for a review of U.S. aid to the country.
