It happens with every woman, but if you are armed with information about the symptoms to watch out for, you will be better prepared mentally for menopause. This #MenopauseAwarenessMonth, we bring you some body changes you can expect any time after you hit age 45 (at times earlier too):
Hot flushes & night sweats: You may suddenly feel heat on your face, neck and chest accompanied by flushing of the skin. There may also be perspiration, palpitations and at times some feelings of physical discomfort too.
Changes in menstrual cycle: The flow may become faster or slower than usual, the duration of your cycle may change, and there may be missed periods.
Vaginal dryness: The area may become dry, there may be pain during intercourse and at times, you may experience incontinence. You may lose interest in sex.
Difficulty in sleeping: The hormonal upheavals may lead to problems in going to sleep, lack of enough sleep and even insomnia.
Mood changes or depression: Just the thought of menopause may be enough to set you thinking, making you moody, anxious and even depressed. But remember that this is also a stage of life, and shall eventually pass.
Keep in mind that all these are due to the hormonal changes your body is experiencing, and are natural. Not all women may face all of them. Also, at times, they may continue for several years before menopause actually hits. You are considered to have reached menopause after you have not had your periods for 12 months. Pregnancy after menopause is unlikely without fertility treatments.
