In the eyes of its inventor, Chris Messina, the hashtag is a success. It accomplished more than he ever intended it to accomplish, but the biggest lesson from its success is not the power of virality or generativity, but actually in the relationships that it fosters between its users. This is why Chris refused to patent the hashtag and refused to allow social media companies like Twitter to purchase it. Inspired by the mathematician, Andrius Kulikauskas, Chris believes that true wealth is in relationships, and so chose to give his invention away to the public.

Chris Messina has worked for over a decade on social technology, product and experience design as well as changing the world by giving away several of his inventions, including the hashtag. Chris helped organize the movement that kickstarted Mozilla Firefox to 100 million downloads back in 2004 before developing the concept of "unconference" events and opening the first dedicated co-working space in 2006. Since then, Chris has been a Developer Advocate at Google, a Developer Experience Lead at Uber and recently co-founded the screen-sharing video chat app, Squad (formerly known as Molly), in 2018.
