Glen Coe is a valley (glen) in the Scottish Highlands. It lies in the Highland Council Area and was previously part of the traditional county of Argyll. The only village at the mouth of the valley is Glencoe, the nearest sub-center is Ballachulish. The River Coe empties here into the sea loch of Loch Leven, a branch of Loch Linnhe. Glen Coe is a popular hiking and skiing area for tourists. The starting point for visits is often nearby Fort William, connected to Glen Coe via the A82.
Glen Coe consists of volcanic rock. The present shape of the mountains was largely created by the heavy glaciation of Scotland during the ice ages. The valley lies between high, steep ridges and is traversed by the River Coe, into which flow many small streams that descend from the mountains in waterfalls. To the north, the elongated massif of Aonach Eagach separates Glen Coe from neighboring Loch Leven. On the south side rise the prominent cliffs of the Three Sisters of Glen Coe, part of the massif of 1150 meter high Bidean nam Bian. The upper entrance to the valley is dominated by the pyramid-shaped northeast face of Buachaille Etive Mòr. Between the two massifs, set somewhat back, is Buachaille Etive Beag. Above the valley entrance to the east lies the wide plateau of Rannoch Moor. The valley entrance from the west is indicated by the prominent rounded peak of the Pap of Glencoe.
