White coat syndrome is the phenomenon of having a higher blood pressure reading within a clinical environment than at home. It’s a topic I find interesting, not least because of the direct link between stress and chronic pain.
If someone is visiting my clinic for the first time to have treatment for chronic back pain, is it possible they could have raised anxiety? Yes, absolutely, and evidence suggests that the anxiety will also have a direct influence on their back pain.
So, one thing I can do is at least create a space which doesn’t look so clinical. Out with the white walls, and in with the warm colours. This hopefully gives a nod in the direction of what to expect during the treatment: something that will be as much about calming the body and mind as it is about targeting any specific issue.
Here’s what clients are saying about the space in their Google reviews.
