STORYLINE
Markets were crowded in the West Bank and Gaza Strip ahead of Eid al-Fitr, the three-day festival which marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr is customarily celebrated in the Muslim world with family gatherings, presents and lunchtime feasts; in the Middle East it will begin on Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on when the new moon is sighted.
In the West Bank city of Ramallah, municipal workers were cleaning the streets and painting the pavements on Sunday. Merchants and shop owners are preparing their goods and hoping for a good profit from the festivities.
Meanwhile the holiday atmosphere was muted in Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade for four years.
"Now there aren''t any salaries. As you see the market is full of goods, but no-one can ask how much things cost, because people don''t have enough money to buy anything," said confectioner, Mohammad Ghandour.
Residents of the Gaza Strip, home to 1.5 (m) million mostly impoverished Palestinians, are doing their best to prepare for the festival despite the blockade that has exhausted the seaside strip''s already strained resources.
