It’s important to monitor your trailer bearings regularly for the safety of your trailer.
If your bearings are making a noise, it’s an indication that it’s time to change them.
When changing bearings, besides your new bearings, you will need grease, basic tools like a hammer, a punch, a 12” wrench and an old rag. You will also need a new split pin, oil seal and dust cap if they are worn or damaged.
1. Remove the dust cap, the split pin, washer and axle nut.
2. Pull the hub outwards towards you, while making sure that the outer bearing, inner bearing and the oil seal do not fall out.
3. Now remove the outer bearings from the hub by lifting them
4. Remove the inner bearing races with a hammer and a punch.
5. Remove the old grease from the hub and the machined surface of the axle with an old rag.
6. Now clean the surface of the axle with kerosene.
7. Observe your axle closely and make sure that the axle is not bent or damaged. Also ensure that the thread on the axle is not damaged.
8. Also check your hub for any burrs or damage. If there are any burrs, you can simply remove them with sandpaper.
9. Apply new grease on the surface of your axle.
10. Pack your new bearings with grease after removing them from the packaging
11. You can use a machine to pack your bearings with grease or just handpack them
12. If you are hand packing your bearings with grease, force grease under the cage between the rollers. You will see the grease roll through the other side.
13. Install the new inner races on to the hub with a hammer and punch
14. Also fill the hub with grease inside the diameter of the outer races
15. Insert the grease packed new bearings onto the hub.
16. Now slide the hub back on to the axle and put the axle washer and castle nut back on the axle.
17. Give the hub a spin a couple of times so that the grease seeps right in.
18. Tighten the castle nut with a wrench.
19. Insert the split pin in the castle nut and bend the ends to lock it.
20. Put the dust cap on top of the hub and tap it slightly with a hammer to make it fit perfectly.
21. Now put the tyre back on the axle and give the trailer a test run with the new bearings.
