After years on the margins of Lithuanian politics, having only one member in the old Parliament, Peasants and Greens won a decisive victory on October‘s elections and today among 141 parliamentarians who made their oaths 54 were from Peasants and Greens party.
‘The fact that even 82 faces are new in Parliament means that the people made their choice to see other faces and renewed politics,’ said President Dalia Grybauskaite during her speech in Parliament.
However, Peasants and Greens, according to already signed coalition deal, will be joined by 17 members of Social Democratic party which led the government in the old parliament, so the new government will not be entirely new.
‘The forming of the government has not yet started,’ said leader Peasants and Greens electoral list Saulius Skvernelis who is party’s candidate for Prime Minister’s post. Skvernelis said he has two weeks to choose a team and to prepare a program.
Peasants and Greens promised to change a controversial new labor code that makes it easier to hire and fire employees, impose a state monopoly on alcohol sales, and cut bureaucracy in order to boost economic growth and to halt mass emigration.
Peasants and Greens owes its success to the stellar popularity of Saulius Skvernelis, a corruption-fighting 46-year-old former national police chief who led party’s electoral list and now is candidate for Prime Minister. His squeaky-clean image turned him into hottest political commodity virtually overnight.

Sound bite (Lithuanian), DALIA GRYBAUSKAITE, President of Lithuania: The fact that even 82 faces are new in Parliament means that the people made their choice to see other faces and renewed politics. I congratulate the eight Seimas of restored Lithuania on his first meeting.
Sound bite (Lithuanian), SAULIUS SKVERNELIS, leader of Peasants and Greens electoral list and their candidate to Prime Minister: The forming of the government has not yet started. (Reporter asks about the time when the government will be formed) The time is clearly defined. When Prime Minister will be approved it will have in two weeks to present a cabinet and a program and then Seimas will need to decide in two weeks whether to approve it, and if so, the work will start (Reporter asks if he knows all the candidates for government) I will not comment at the moment.
