Dual Pane File Managers
pcmanfm ( lxde)- F3 to dual pane. actually opens to tabs, but if you open a 3rd tab things get weird.
crashed after unmounting network share
dolphin (kde) (extra commands - sudo apt-get install dolphin kdesdk-dolphin-plugins ruby kde-servicemenu-rootactions kwrite kate ark kdesudo)
nautilus forks
caja (mate file manager) f3 to do dual pane. lots of preferences, not much for integration,
which is good because there is less to go wrong.
nemo (Files) (cinnamon file manager) f3 to do dual pane. very similar to caja in that its a fork of nautilus (gnome2).
has some nice extra right click options that will work if you also install the cinnamon terminal and such.
***nemo takes over the desktop and stays running unless you use the --no-desktop switch.
File Managers with no desktop environment affiliations
xfe (older file manager, still developed, reminiscent of windows file manager pre-win95) no network browsing/mounting.
spacefm no thunar bookmaks no trash by default,
strange default configuration)
requires a plugin and some configuration for network browsing/mounting (udevil.conf, mountshare plugin)
no trash without a plugin and some custom config.
sunflower (small and simply, python based, install python-vte for the internal terminal to work). smb connection manager
weird trash integration
norton-commander clones
gnome-commander - (unreliable smb share manager) no trash feature
mc (console/terminal app), no trash, no smb. but mean and lean in the best way :)
