Aug.17 -- Angela Merkel meets Vladimir Putin this weekend in a surprise move that analysts say shows how foes and allies of the U.S. are shifting. Syria, violence in Eastern Ukraine and a joint natural gas pipeline are to be discussed. The meeting comes before the U.S. imposes new sanctions on Russia next week.
