You will soon see our new rescue boat, Marine 1, serving the community on the Saginaw River and Saginaw Bay. The Fire Operations Division of the Bay City Department of Public Safety was able to get the boat for FREE through a government program. The boat was once used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and outlived it’s usefulness for that agency. However, there’s a lot of life left in it!
We’ve since updated the paint and decals, as well as added new seats, a GPS, lights and a siren. It will replace our current rescue boat which needs to be trailered and launched each time it’s used. The new rescue boat will be docked at Liberty Harbor Marina, making our response time quicker.
Monday morning our team took it out for its maiden voyage. Firefighters and public safety officers will get used to the Marine 1 and begin using it shortly. The other rescue boat will be used as a backup.
Listen in as Fire Chief Kurt Corradi explains how this new-to-us boat will be put to good use.
