Herodotus was a Greek writer and geographer who is known as the first historian. Around 425 BC, Herodotus published his magnum opus: a long account of the Greco-Persian wars, which he called the History. Before Herodotus, no writer had made such a systematic and complete study of the past and had not tried to explain the cause and effect of its events. After Herodotus, historical analysis became an essential part of intellectual and political life.
Unlike the authors who describe their lives at the beginning of their book, Herodotus is content with this simple sentence at the beginning of his book: "The purpose of Herodotus of Halicarnassus to present the results of his research here is that the passage of time will forget about human works and great achievements. Greeks and Berbers (non-Greeks) and the reasons for the conflicts between these two peoples should be clarified." The available information about his life is very little and the same amount is mainly taken from two articles of the Byzantine encyclopedia Suda. According to this source, Herodotus was born in Halicarnassus and migrated to Turin in present-day southern Italy in 444 BC, where he probably died. He is known as the father of history.
