Since his victory on the stage in Cambrai, Tony Martin had worn the Yellow Jersey for the first time in his life. The stage at Le Havre did not include any difficulties likely to threaten his place at the top of the general classification. However, immediately after the red flame signalling the last kilometre, the German fell heavily and broke his right shoulder. He bravely reached the finishing line assisted by his team-mates including world champion Michal Kwiatkowski, while another Quick Step rider, Zdenek Stybar, tasted victory. The two men graced the podium that day, but for Martin the ceremony had a bitter taste, already aware that he would not be resuming the race the next day.
