Winster, Birchover & Limestone Way Walk, Peak District Walks Derbyshire - Route & Scenery
Winster, Birchover & Limestone Way Walk was about 4 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of enclosed tracks, field paths and a woodland path; a flagged causeway across a marsh; a quiet country lane, some short road sections and pavements. The walking was easy on level or undulating ground with gentle to moderate slopes. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. Some of the paths were a little muddy and slippery in places, especially on the flagged causeway through the marsh. There were fourteen stiles to negotiate.
Along the walk you visit: the Limestone Way; Birchover and Winster. Scenery includes: fine views across an open landscape with fields, pastures and rolling hills dotted with woodland such as Stoop Wood; quiet country lanes and enclosed tracks with moss covered drystone walls; a flagged causeway through a marsh; St Michael’s Church, a Wesleyan Chapel and other stone buildings in Birchover; the Market House and other stone buildings in Winster. You may also see sheep in fields and pastures.
I did this walk with my wife Anne whilst on a Derbyshire Peak District walking holiday during January 2020. We drove from our holiday accommodation in Baslow, Derbyshire to the starting location of the Winster, Derbyshire. We parked in Winster South car park, south west of Winster, off the B5056 near Wyns Tor, at grid reference SK 238 602, which was also the start location of the walk.
