Magnitude 5.9 earthquake hits near Faizabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred in the early hours of Thursday, January 5, 2023, at 18:25 local time near Faizabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, as reported by the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).
Based on preliminary data, the earthquake was at a moderate to moderate depth at 191 km. The earthquake's strength may have been dampened by its relatively great depth below the surface, which made it feel weaker in absolute terms. The earthquake's precise magnitude, epicenter, and depth may be revised in the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies publish their reports.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which assigned it a magnitude 5.9 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), reported the same earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake shouldn't have caused significant damage, but may have been felt by many people as a light tremor in the epicenter area.
Strong tremors could be felt in Jurm which was 39 km from the epicenter, Ashkāsham was 67 km away, Faizabad was 71 km away, Ishqoshim was 75 km away, Farkhar was 86 km away and Taloqan was 117 km away.
