Why is my oven light staying on?
It is normally on when you’re cooking. People often think something is wrong if it is not.
It is sometimes on when I’m not cooking.
Does your oven have a button where you can turn on the light even when it is not cooking?
I’m not sure.
The light could be on because you’re hitting the button to turn on the light when you meant some other control, or because the kids keep checking to see if you’re making cookies.
That I’d believe if the kids did not know to check the pantry for store bought cookies first.
People notice when the light has burned out and does not come on when it should. It is less common for an electrical problem to cause it to stay on when it shouldn’t.
If I have an electrical problem like that, I should be afraid of the fire hazard, not the minor waste of electricity.
It could simply be a control board problem.
Wiring would be a relatively simple thing to check, for a loose connection. A control board is expensive to replace and not something most people could fix themselves.
My first question would be if the control board is flashing a series of lights or showing an error message.
If it gave me an error, I would know to call a repair person to fix it.
The control board of some smart appliances functions like a gaming console, where you can fix the error by rebooting it.
How would I reboot an oven?
Unplug it or turn it off at the power breaker, then turn it back on.
Unplugging it would certainly turn off the light. Unfortunately, I cannot use the oven during that time either.
Many ovens turn on the oven light when the door is open. Are you sure the door is closed all the way?
Of course.
If the door hinge is bent or the seals warped, the door does not close all the way. Then the light stays on.
I try to keep the door closed so kids do not sit on it.
Then the door sensor may be damaged, such that it thinks the door is open when it isn’t.
I know if the pop out thing is broken off, it may not turn on the light when you open the door. What do you do in the opposite situation?
Call a repair man to replace the sensor, and if that's not it, the control board after checking the wiring.
And I thought the waste of electricity was costly.
