Blyth plant powers ahead.
The accelerator has been pressed to the floor for Britain’s electric vehicle industry with news that the Government is backing the great Northumberland Gigaplant.
Britishvolt’s plant, now under construction at Blyth, will build enough cells for more than 300,000 electric battery packs a year.
And this week the government announced that its Automotive Transformation Fund has made an in principle funding offer, which will secure additional private funding worth £1.7 billion from private investors Tritax and Abrdn.
It’s a timely boost to say the least. More electric cars were sold in Britain last year than the previous five years combined.
And what great news for Northumberland with 3,000 jobs to be created at the plant and a further 5,000 in local supply chains.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is absolutely right when he says the news is a major boost for Britain and a resounding vote of confidence in the North East economy.
