Annie Furlong describes the moment her Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather, Patrick Furlong and his fellow labourer, Joshua Cross accidentally caused the third largest fire in London's history (after the Great Fire and the Blitz), the burning of the palace of Westminster which was witnessed by thousands of people, including Charles Dickens and Turner, both of whom chronicled the moment through their famed talents.
Annie is nine years old and acquired special permission from her headteacher to take the day off school so that she could learn more about the effect her ancestor's mistake made on England's history.
With thanks to Caroline Shenton for her tour and education.
Please note, a correction to the painting in the Tate, it is actually a watercolour by Turner named "The Burning of the Houses of Parliament". "The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons" is the title of two oil on canvas paintings, the one used in this video is held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art - more information on these two paintings can be found here [ Ссылка ]
