National Park Risnjak | A Piece of Croatian Paradise
Two mountainous massifs rise from the forest area of Gorski kotar - Risnjak and Snježnik. Only three kilometers apart, they look like mountain twins face to face. In the lowest parts of the Park, the most beautiful Croatian river, the Kupa, embarks on its long river route. Risnjak is a forest kingdom and it was the dense forest communities that provided it with a "ticket" to enter the society of national parks.
Risnjak is a massif of more uniform landscape, which can be read from the names of its peaks - North Mali Risnjak (1434 m) and South Mali Risnjak (1248 m). And their peaks are close neighbors, only 1.8 kilometers away.
Snježnik, on the other hand, belongs to the elongated mountain slope with lower peaks: Međuvrhi (1460 m), Guslica (1490 m) and Planina (1426 m). The views from the tops of these massifs are a wonderful place to observe Gorski kotar, the Kvarner Bay and the Alps in Slovenia.
The dense and endless greenery of the Gorski Kotar forests ensured Risnjak's entry into the society of Croatian national parks. At only sixty square kilometers, there are fourteen forest communities, thirty plant communities, and seventy percent of the Park's area is a zone of strict protection.
Nature is here its own master. In the silence of one's own wisdom, life is completely sustainable. Therefore, for science and researchers, Risnjak is invaluable because here they explore nature without human traces. The largest part of the Park, more than half, is overgrown with a mixed forest of beech and fir. It covers an altitude range of 600 to 1200 meters. Above that height, the fir is getting smaller, there are beeches, but much smaller in size. It is already a belt of pre-mountain beech. It is the second largest forest community in the Risnjak National Park. In addition to these, with the height boundaries of a certain forest community, there are some other azonal, scattered ones.
Man does not live in the heights of Risnjak. Some risnja forests have never been cut down. Inaccessibility denied man the exploitation of wood. Thus, the original forests remained, real rainforests in the belt of pre-mountain beech around the highest peaks and in the area of forests around Bijele stijene - zones of the strictest protection and therefore are a place intended for scientific research.
Beauty does not have a measuring instrument, but many will say that this river is the most beautiful. As early as 1963, the source of the Kupa and its surroundings enjoyed the status of a protected area.
The spring of Kupa is certainly one of the most attractive karst places and the still unsolved riddle of karst as one of the deepest Croatian springs.
Beneath the 100-meter-high vertical rock, at an altitude of 321 meters, there is a lake from which the strong and clean river Kupa flows. In the hinterland, there are sinking karst waters that bring her their water, and then Kupa unites them. The water flows from a vertical hatch 154 meters deep.
Kupska dolina is the only inhabited area of the National Park. About twenty inhabitants live in the settlements of Dolari, Podgrič, Razloški Okrug, Donji Okrug, Gornji Okrug, Gornja Krašićevica and Razloge. It is worth preserving these sites because of the architectural and ethnographic heritage.
The flora on Risnjak is a real bouquet of the most spectacular colors. Schlosser's meadow below the top of Risnjak is literally sprinkled with flowers. The arrival in spring and summer rewards the visitor with a miraculous experience of scattered colorfulness. Here grows the star lily and eelgrass - a plant that is extremely endangered by picking and therefore protected.
1148 species and subspecies of vascular flora have been identified in the National Park. As the space is incompletely explored, the number is certainly much higher.
