The Broward Sheriff’s Office completed a successful full scale active shooter training exercise on Wednesday, June 23, at Port Everglades and just offshore called “Operation Iron Tide.”
The training exercise entailed a realistic terrorist threat onboard a dinner boat about three miles off of Dania Beach adjacent to Port Everglades. This was the training scenario -- two terrorists made entry onto the dinner boat and shot and wounded a number of passengers. BSO’s SWAT team safely entered the dinner boat, shot one terrorist and placed the other into custody. As part of the exercise, a BSO deputy was shot and wounded. When it was safe to enter, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded and transported those with critical injuries to hospitals onshore.
The exercise enabled first responders to practice coordinated response plans and to gain valuable insight and practice in handling an active shooter threat at sea. BSO’s departments of Preparedness and Response, Law Enforcement, and Fire Rescue and Emergency Services participated in the exercise along with Port Everglades, the FBI, the U.S. Coast Guard, fire departments from the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County and fire departments from across Broward County.
