Helmut Scholz, MEP, in the plenary dabate of the European Parliament on the future relationship between the European Union und the United Kingdom. Strasbourg, 11/02/2020.
"We are all aware that there are many important aspects of our relationship with the UK that need to be addressed. That is our task, in the interests of our citizens in the economic, social, ecological and cultural dimensions. Therefore, it is less a question of a free trade agreement, and more on fair and inclusive economic and trade relations.
However, I think it is worrying to regulate everything in a single de facto association agreement, as was the case with TTIP. Questions of cooperation with armed forces, energy and network, the police, or the regulation of airspace, must not be removed from parliamentary control and handed over to the committees created within the agreement. I appeal to the Council: create transparency. Maintain democratic standards.
I expressly commend the Commission for the new meaning it gives in the draft mandate to the UN sustainability goals, the Paris Agreement, the ILO and fundamental rights including data privacy. Do not slow down the ambitious expansion of our future regulations for the protection of the environment and product safety by treating these topics as a question of trade barriers."
