▼How Matcha is Actually Served in Japanese Tea Ceremony▼
[ Ссылка ]
During a Japanese tea ceremony, we must rotate our tea bowls twice before drinking.
But what is this for?
Every utensil that is used in tea ceremonies is a piece of art with beautiful designs to entertain the guests, and the tea bowl is one of the most important items.
These tea bowls (as a piece of art) actually have something called the 正面 shoumen meaning the front, which is considered to be the most beautiful side of the tea bowl.
When the host serves the tea for you, he/she will have the “front” facing you so you can see it. But when you actually pick it up to drink it, you don’t want to drink from the “front” because that’s the most important side of the bowl. This is why the guests must rotate the bowl clockwise to move the front to the left, and drink from a different side.
Also the reason why you must rotate the bowl with two small turns is because if you try this in one large turn, you might accidentally drop the tea bowl. Spilling matcha on the tatami mats is already bad enough, but if you break the tea bowl, that would be a nightmare.
