(25 Jul 1978) In Portugal on Tuesday (July 25Th), the Socialists hung onto power despite the collapse of their coalition with the conservative centre democrats. Socialist Prime Minister Mario Soares vowed his party would continue to govern despite the withdrawal of three centre democrat ministers from the coalition cabinet. But opposition politicians said it was inevitable that Portugal's President, Ramalho Antonio Eanes, would have to call a general election. They said the Socialists could not continue to govern Portugal on their own. The Centre Democrats started the crisis on Monday (July 24th) with the cabinet withdrawal over what they called pro- communist farm policies
