Problem Revealed: What Failed On SpaceX Booster 13's Landing?
=======================================
Eyewitness accounts reveal that this section floated for some time before finally sinking. The reason behind the sinking has now been clearly explained. Watching the live feed from Everyday Astronauts at around T plus 1 hour 22 minutes, a ship was seen near the floating rear section of the B-13. After the fire in this section appeared to have subsided, a deep and intense flare suddenly erupted. Upon closer inspection, a small spot of light was observed in the area of the liquid oxygen tank. This suggests that the ship used a weapons system to fire a round into the remains of the B-13, causing the ship to re-ignite and contribute to the sinking process. Reports estimate that the round fired was about 20 millimeters in size. Ryan Hansen’s discussion room even shared a comparison image on X showing the impact trail, providing compelling visual evidence. However, it appears that the ship’s efforts alone were not enough to sink the rear section. Additional reports indicate that aircraft were deployed to complete the task. Flight 24 data tracked the flight path of the N-503XX aircraft circling around the booster landing area. This aircraft, equipped with a 30-millimeter cannon, was likely used to attack the remains of the B-13. Footage from Padre Lab also reveals several aircraft in the area, supporting this claim. Why would SpaceX do this? In my opinion, SpaceX decided to sink the entire prototype because recovering the B-13 intact was not feasible. Leaving the booster exposed would pose risks, such as revealing internal structural details to competitors or other organizations. Additionally, immediate recovery of the floating parts would be risky given the unstable nature of the situation. Sinking the remains for later recovery was likely considered the safest and most practical option. As for using an external vehicle to target the B-13, this may have been a necessary backup plan due to damage to the booster’s communications system during the explosion.
