Overall, the Canon STM lens delivers quiet and accurate, full-time autofocus, especially when compared to the louder and clunkier AF on the Canon EF-S 18-55mm. However, the Canon STM 18-135mm does begin to hunt and have a hard time tracking subjects moving faster than just a slow walk, especially in low light situations.

If silent and continuous AF is something you require, we definitely recommend the Canon STM 18-135mm lens over the Canon EF-S 18-55mm.

Today, we're reviewing the Canon Rebel T4i / 650D / Kiss X6i and showing you several hands-on test shots that highlight the cool, new autofocusing features of the 18-135mm STM (Silent Stepping Motor) lens.

The T4i features a brand new autofocusing system that allows for continuous, full-time focus. Up until now, no Canon DSLR has had the ability to perform Full-Time AF while in video mode. With Canon's new AutoFocus servo, the T4i provides quieter and smoother full-time autofocus. No more unwanted motor sounds and abrupt lunges while hunting for focus. When paired with a non-STM lens, the T4i still produces loud and clunky autofocus. So it's important to remember, if you want smooth and quiet focus, use the T4i with an STM-capable lens.

A cool, new feature of the T4i is the ability to perform "touch focus." Using the camera's LCD, simply tap any part of the screen and the T4i will automatically adjust focus. There's a slight bit of hunting, but overall, the focal transitions are fast and responsive.

Overall, the Canon T4i provides some truly groundbreaking AutoFocus features, including fast and responsive touch-focus and smooth and quiet full-time focus.

But the camera isn't without it's flaws. As much as Canon has done to advance it's full-time AutoFocusing feature, we found that the T4i still has a hard time tracking subjects that are moving faster than even just a slow walk. For many videographers, that type of autofocus is simply too slow.
