The challenges facing the food system are intimately entwined with the great challenges of our times, climate change, environmental sustainability, food and nutritional security , livelihoods and social equity drivers. While now (remarkably) often overlooked, the irrepressible march of population growth and the need to maintain food security sharpens our thinking about the choices open to us. We must look not for the obvious solutions to individual challenges but to the more complex win-win solutions that simultaneously address multiple challenges. This all comes in an environment where on one hand governments are impatient for science to provide short term economic solutions and on the other hand, sections of society express distrust of experts and knowledge-driven solutions. In this talk I will explore these issues and talk to some of the ways that QAAFI will take its agenda forward in the context of the UQ agenda in agrifood and the bioeconomy.
Professor Matthew Morell has had an extensive career over four decades characterised by his focus on conducting and leading high-quality agricultural research that delivers benefits to the agriculture and food sectors, and to consumers. His work on photosynthesis, starch biosynthesis, grain quality and nutrition provided a strong basis for leading multi-disciplinary research. In leadership, Professor Morell has a track record in developing effective teams and working with institutions and their stakeholders to deliver innovations for the future.
