"Mr Fischler the European Commissioner (Franz Fischler, Commissioner for Agriculture and Fisheries) has decided to implement a constitution of a kind of fish which he judges to be under threat - cod, and any boats that fished even the smallest amount last year should remain 80 percent of its time in the docks in the following year. So, economically, it's intolerable."

STORYLINE:
Fishermen blockaded the French ports of Calais, Dunkirk and Boulougne-sur-Mer on Wednesday in an attempt to disrupt busy English Channel sea lanes.
The action was taken in protest against fishing quotas imposed by the European Union.
Fishermen are angry over the EU's decision to impose sharp reductions on catches of certain types of fish like cod because of alarming evidence of declining stocks.
EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy expressed sympathy for the fishermen but defended the commission's decision.
Hundreds of boats are expected to take part in the action.
As well as a large home contingent, unions claimed that fishermen from Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark also set sail to clog waterways near France's northern Pas-de-Calais region, an area that contains some of Europe's busiest shipping lanes.
