Today, October 4th 2023, leaders from SAG-AFTRA actors union and Hollywood studios / streamers are sitting down to try to iron out a deal so the actors can return to work and entertainment companies can resume production of Movie and TV.
One of the major points of contention during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes has been the use of / regulation of Generative AI tools in the production process. While the writers came to an agreement last week, actors unions are still working out details of AI. Right before the union decided to strike, during negotiations for a new deal with studios, SAG-AFTRA was presented a ‘groundbreaking’ AI proposal that background performers should be able to be scanned, get one day’s pay, and their companies should own that scan, their image, their likeness and should be able to use it for the rest of eternity on any project they want, with no consent and no compensation.
The history of Hollywood labor actions has seen major companies rely on their deeper pockets to absorb the pain and wait out their employees. Arguably, that advantage appears even more pronounced today, with the studios joined at the bargaining table by huge corporations like Amazon and Apple, which operate their own streaming services as they expanded into the programming game.
