Romanians voted on Sunday (3/11) in presidential and parliamentary elections that are likely to see incumbent Ion Iliescu returned as head of state, but faced with a legislature dominated by the opposition.
Iliescu, who came to power after the 1989 revolution and was re-elected with a large majority in 1992, is the favourite of the 16 candidates running in the presidential election. He was the first of the candidates to cast his vote at a polling station in a residential area of the capital. Iliescu's main rivals are Emil Constantinescu of the Christian Democratic Party and former prime minister Petre Roman of the Social Democratic Party.
