Alkan is awesome. A contemporary of Chopin and Liszt, this french composer-pianist penned some of the most daring, difficult, sublime and strange music in history. The problem is that, aside from a few pieces, his music isn’t that well known. But there are musicians out there who’re working tirelessly to rectify this, and recently I had the pleasure of interviewing one of them: internationally renowned pianist and chairman of the Alkan Society, Mark Viner (no relation).
Through Mark’s scholarly insights and performances, we’ll explore what makes Alkan’s music so extraordinary.
