Lithium ion batteries have become the dominant energy storage solution in the 21st century and their development in the 1970s has brought about a reimaging of the technology around us. However, all batteries are based on chemicals and their properties to produce energy when desired. Safety data sheets provide us with information on a chemical’s hazards, but how many of you have read one for the battery in your smartphone or laptop?
In this session Consultant Nigel Blumire will explore the history of batteries but also their makeup so we can understand where the hazards come from. The risks in using a battery are very low but with more and more of these on the market, the increase in incidents associated with them, pose a serious risk to businesses and the general public. Battery manufacturers are well aware of the safety features required and deliver exceptional products but as users we need to be aware of our own responsibility as well.
