(1 Aug 2016) Iraqi officials on Monday declared that the city of Jazirat al-Khalidiyah, an area where Islamic State fighters have taken shelter since being expelled from the city of Fallujah last month, has been "liberated".
Footage filmed by the Associated Press on an embed with pro-Iraqi government forces in western Anbar province showed troops firing at targets from both the air and the ground.
The offensive was launched by Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi (Shiite Popular Mobilisation forces), also known as paramilitary forces, along with other security troops.
On 26 June, Iraqi forces declared they had "fully liberated" Fallujah from the Sunni-led extremist group that took over the city 40 miles (65 kilometres) west of Baghdad more than two years ago.
