La Geria is an area of the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands (Spain), known for the uniqueness of its volcanic landscape. It was used for the planting of vines for the production of wine, the Malvasía variety being abundant.
The vines are planted in cones formed in the lapilli, locally called picón, and additionally protected by small dry stone walls. Fruit trees, such as fig trees, are also planted in the same way. This type of planting allows plants to root more easily in fertile soil, while the top layer of lapilli reduces evapotranspiration. In addition, the shape of the holes and the additional wall protect the crops from the wind.
