An organic whole chicken is almost $20 here and they’re small! I’d take a home grown chicken any day

I’ve mentioned before that raising meat birds are not my favorite. BUT they are a decently cheap farm animal that is cheap to raise. $9 per bird is the cost of purchasing the chick, feeding it, butchering it. That cost does not include our time. Our birds are typically between 6-9lbs.
I wanted to do some pricing to try and calculate how much chicken at the store is compared to ours. I took family pack pricing of each cut and divided it out based on how many were in the package. These are all average pricing: Thighs $1.65, Breasts $3.62, Wings $1.62, Legs $1. Total: $7.89 per bird without the backbone and neck.
(I will also make note that our birds are typically larger than those at the store, and that we also utilize the chicken bones to make homemade stock for our family.)
So for $1.20 more than what you’d spend on chicken meat at the store, you could have fresh chicken meat, know how the chicken is raised, what it was fed, and that it got to enjoy grass and sunshine up until it’s last breath on your farm.
Are they my favorite animal to raise? No. But they are economical, don’t need a ton of space, and are an easy first meat animal to try for your homestead if you want to take the jump!
