Nail biting, like any other symptoms of anxiety is a habit. After a while anxiety can be because of so many things like lifestyle. It can be because of the way we are. We have seen diseases, we have seen conditions where we have felt very helpless or we have had some circumstance where we have just not been able to go and you get into some habit which gives you a certain degree of comfort because it takes away the onus of active from you. For that much time you are inactive actually speaking and your mind can get diverted. Nail biting is one of those. There are lot of other habits like picking of nose, scratching of hair, people pull out their own hair and they have bald patches and then shaking of legs, all these fall in the category of anxiety. When doctors say anxiety and when a patient understands anxiety, sometimes there can be a difference. When I say anxiety, there can be a subacute stage and you say, no, no I am not anxious and I bite my nails because that is a habit I have. Where did that habit come from? It would have its roots deep down way back into some moments of helplessness. Recognizing this itself can bring you to a point of remedy. It is a habit and like an old saying which says that to overcome any habit, you need 21 days of persistent command to yourself. Try it first try and sit on your hands. You will always realise that you bite your nails when your hands are idle or when you are idle. Try and sit with your hands under your limbs. Number two, if you have a very active nail biting and if you are very sure and committed that you are going to get out of it, try chewing gum for a few days. You cannot bite your nails with chewing teeth and third stay well focused. Yes I bite, no I don’t want to bite and between these two statements lies the treatment that you want to get rid of it.
