Likely Victor Herbert’s most popular show (after Babes in Toyland), Naughty Marietta contains many of his hit melodies. The libretto by Rida Johnson Young, usually a detraction in his works, is a step up, but needed considerable reworking of the dialog by Thomas Petiet. In this scene, Adah (Marilyn Kennedy), the mulatto mistress of the evil Etienne, believes she has lost his love to Marietta. She laments her pathetic condition in one of the great ballads of all time. This video was made of a rehearsal for the production by the Comic Opera Guild in 1981.
