Written during the composer’s concert tours to London and Vienna in 1902, the Serenade revisits the world of Beethoven and Mozart with a late-romantic perspective. The typical serenade elements – a brisk march of entry, a soulful romance, a scherzo, a theme and variations and a rondo, are re-invented with generous sharing of the themes amongst the instruments.
