CEASEFIRE AGREEMENT
Iranian-backed Houthis have agreed to a five-day humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al Jubeir claimed the ceasefire would give Houthis a chance to show “they care about their people and Yemenis”. More than 13 hundred people have been killed since the start of Saudi-led coalition operations in the country.
KENAN EVREN DIES
Kenan Evren, the leading figure of Turkey’s 1980 coup has died at a hospital in the capital city Ankara at age 97. Evren had been under treatment at the Gulhane Military Medical Academy since 2012 and in serious condition in recent days. According to Turkey’s official data, more than 650,000 people were arrested after the 1980 military coup. 230,000 of those people were put on trial due to their political beliefs. Hundreds of people were killed during the years of political unrest. Fifty people were executed by the military government. Evren was sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ankara high criminal court on June 18th last year for his role in the coup.
DIYALI PRISON BREAK
Iraqi officials have announced that ISIS claimed responsibility for a prison break in Iraq. On May 9th, security sources announced that 12 police officers and over 50 inmates died in clashes resulting from a large scale jailbreak attempt which saw 40 prisoners escape the Khalis prison in Diyala.
ARMED GROUP KILLS OFFICERS
Macedonia Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska has confirmed five police officers were killed and more than 30 were injured in armed clashes with an unidentified armed group. The armed group is believed to have entered the city of Kumanovo from Kosovo with the intent to attack local police stations. Three weeks ago, 40 ethnic Albanians from Kosovo demanded the creation of an Albanian state in Macedonia. They had partially gained control of a police station located on the northern border of Macedonia.
