The Sukhoi Su-17, NATO reporting name is Fitter, was the first variable-sweep wing aircraft to enter Soviet service. Its variants were Su-20 and Su-22, which were export versions. The Su-17 made its maiden flight on August 2, 1966, and entered service in 1970. Designed to be a single-seat fighter-bomber, the Su-17 measures 19.02 m (62 ft 5 in) long, a wingspan of 13.68 m (44 ft 11 in) when spread, and 10.m (33 ft) when swept. It has a height of 5.12 m (16 ft 10 in), an empty weight of 12.16 tonnes, and a maximum takeoff weight of 19.43 tonnes.
