Title: Robot Learning for Adaptive Informative Path Planning
Abstract: Autonomous robots represent a new frontier in a wide range of monitoring and research scenarios. In many applications, including precision agriculture, inspection, and exploration, robots are rapidly replacing conventional methods of data collection at higher levels of precision, safety, and time- and cost-efficiency. However, a key challenge is the adaptive informative path planning (AIPP) problem: How can we plan a trajectory for an autonomous robot to follow that maximises the sensory information acquired about an unknown environment while simultaneously respecting its resource constraints? This talk will discuss recent advances in AIPP that enable autonomous robotic data gathering, focusing in particular on the role of learning-based methods, including reinforcement learning and active learning, and outline challenges for future work.
