The City of Melbourne says at the stroke of midnight, 2013 will be ushered in with around 8.5 tonnes of fireworks - worth about $2.8 million - accompanied by a 10-minute music track launched from more than 20 sites across the city, including 18 buildings.
Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle, says organisers have moved the focus away from the CBD this year, with three official live sites featuring entertainment at Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Docklands.
An early family-oriented fireworks display will kick off at 9.30pm (AEDT) at Yarra Park and public transport will be free from 6pm until the first normal services on New Year's Day.
In Queensland, families and revellers in Brisbane can head to the city's South Bank Parklands to see out 2012 in style. Two separate fireworks displays, at 8.30pm and midnight (AEST), will light up the Brisbane River while there'll also be a laser light show for those attending.
The South Bank area will be alcohol-free for the celebrations, with the best vantage points being the Cultural Forecourt and the Clem Jones Promenade. Admission to the precinct is free.
Meanwhile, there'll also be fireworks displays at Portside Wharf at Hamilton at 9pm and midnight, with shuttle buses available to take revellers from the precinct into Fortitude Valley from 12.30am, once celebrations end.
On the Gold Coast, organisers of the Surfers Paradise New Year's Eve celebrations are hoping a superhero theme will bring a more family-friendly crowd. Children are being invited to dress up as their favourite superhero before attending one of the biggest fireworks shows in the state, with more than 10-thousand fireworks released from the Surfers Paradise beach.
The nation's capital will come alive tonight, with a free New Year's Eve concert, a dance party and a fireworks display to farewell 2012 and kick off its 2013 centenary year with a bang. The family concert in Canberra's Civic Square will feature national ARIA winning journeyman Diesel, alongside local supporting acts Heuristic and Tuchasoul between 7pm to 1am.

Festivities will begin with the City of Perth's free outdoor New Year's Eve Northbridge party.
