It lies 28 km from #Volos and is built at an altitude of 400 meters. Through the rich #olive groves and the old plane trees, the beautiful #mansions of #Mileo rise impressively, watchful witnesses of the #history of the village.
Through crystal #springs and green #landscapes, paved #cobblestones unfold that lead the #traveler to beautiful courtyards, warm smiles and #traditional #cafes. For those who love nature, the village is also suitable for #hiking with several routes, most of which are passable with appropriate markings. The climb to the #chapel of Athos is one of the easiest #walks, while you can also choose the #route to the De #Kiriko #bridge or the Kala Nera – Milies route. The routes Boufa – Milies and #Tsagarada – Milies are longer and more difficult. The #Naturalist group of Volos organizes organized #walks in Pelion.
Milies is also connected to the well-known #train of Pelion. Thus, the #visitor can through a wonderful route travel back in time and experience the #past, in the company of many smells of #flowers and #herbs characteristic of Pelion. #Mountzouris is available to the visitor throughout the #summer period, until the end of October, with a daily route at 11 am. from Upper #Lechonia.
The geographical location of Milea is a base for #exploring the landscapes, villages and beaches of South Pelion. If you visit Milies in August, don't miss the "Miliotiki Vradia", where the #wine flows abundantly in the company of traditional bands and #folk #dances.
It is no coincidence that Milies took the lead in Pelion during the #Revolution of 1821. Grigorios Konstantas and Anthimos Gazis, who were the founders of the 'Psychis Akos' school, came from here. Today this school functions as a library, the famous #library of Milea, endowed with rare historical material of the Greek Revolution and is a necessary stop for travelers of all ages. A partner in preserving the historical tradition of the village is the #Folklore #Museum, which is located a few meters from the village #square.
Apart from the Folklore Museum and the Library, an integral part of the architecture of Milea is the #church of the #Pammegistos #Taxiarchs. It was built in 1741, during the Turkish Empire, a period when #Christianity was banned. For this reason, the lack of religious symbols, such as a cross and a bell tower, is evident, which impresses the visitor observing the facade of the church.
Milies has a strong #tourism development offering many options for #accommodation and entertainment. #Guests, #rental #rooms, traditional #taverns with local #cuisine, cafes and bars are at the disposal of the village's visitors.
Milies are built at an altitude of 400 meters and are 28 kilometers from Volos. According to the 2011 census, they have 640 permanent residents. Tradition says that they were founded by people who came as refugees from Milies in #Evia - a village that still exists, but suffered in the past from #pirate attacks, which from time to time led it to desolation. Historical research cannot certify whether such a #story is true, however the oldest written reference to the existence of the settlement (1510) indeed belongs to periods with many such problems.
Milies would become part of the Greek state much later, in 1881. The settlement suffered again during the #Occupation (1943), when in retaliation for local #resistance actions the Germans burned it down, simultaneously executing 25 residents.
Milies declined further after the devastating earthquakes of the 1950s and the intensive start of urbanization in Greece, but from the 1980s onwards it could and did experience a new life, this time as a #populartourist #destination.
Uniquely combining the important historical past with a typical Pelioreite landscape full of chestnuts, olives and (of course) apple trees, the village has a lot to offer the visitor - both in nature and in attractions. It is thanks to this combination that it is considered by many as a summary of all of Pelion.
Milies is a beautiful and very well preserved traditional settlement, full of stone mansions, picturesque streets and several fountains. Equally wonderful, however, is the natural landscape around the village, which has been properly utilized, with the opening of paths. It is no coincidence that the #Naturalist Club of Volos also often organizes its walks here.
