A new Banksy artwork is to be taken down by hired contractors, hours after it was unveiled in north-west London.

The street artist posted a photo of the new design – a silhouette of a cat on an empty, distressed billboard – on Instagram on Saturday without any caption. It was his sixth to be revealed in the capital in recent days.

The billboard, which showed a cat with its arms stretched forward and back arched, was on Edgware Road in Cricklewood, north-west London.

However, contractors were asked to remove the artwork because of safety concerns. One, who gave his name as Marc, said they had been hired to replace the billboard on Monday, but that the plans were brought forward in case someone “rips it down and leaves it unsafe”.

Once removed, the artwork will be kept in the contractors’ yard to “see if anyone collects it”, he said, adding: “I’ve been told to keep it careful in case he wants it.” If nobody collects the piece it will be sent to a skip, he said.
