Of the 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom is one of 11 countries that do not use the euro currency.
But the strength of the currency has weakened since its launch in January 2002, prompting concern from many people in the UK who share mixed views on joining the euro as the their continent slumps futher into economic decline.
Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from the coastal city of Brighton about how the new UK government is now even more stoic in its resistance.
