President Rodrigo Roa Duterte affirmed his administration’s continuing commitment and efforts in supporting the country’s farmers as he led the distribution of agricultural assistance to the farmers of Region 12 in a ceremony in Pigcawayan, Cotabato.
A total of PhP58,048,192.67 worth of farm inputs, machineries and irrigation system had been distributed to the local farmers, farmer-cooperatives and associations in the said region.
In his speech, President Duterte encouraged the farmers to work together in raising greater productivity and competitiveness in the agricultural sector, where he assured them of government’s support through its current programs and projects. He asked them to give the Rice Tariffication Law a chance, which according to him, shall strengthen the economy and provide new opportunities to their sector.
“I would like to note that the government is pursuing efforts to improve research and development initiatives --- Enhancement Fund, the Philippine Rice Research Institute has started distribution of inbred rice seeds to farmers nationwide,” the President stated.
He added that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of Agriculture (DA), and the National Food Authority (NFA) are working to operationalize the distribution of rice to the beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
“These are only among the various programs that we are undertaking to help farmers cope up with the greater decrease in the rice prices by enabling a faster rollover of the NFA rice stocks and freeing the warehouses to accommodate palay from local farmers,” he said.
President Duterte also commended the farmers’ invaluable contributions to the socio-economic growth of Mindanao, promising to maintain regular consultations with the agricultural sector to help with their needs such as farm-to-market roads, irrigation systems, farm equipment and other tools to increase rice productivity.
